| On August 31st, 2002 the "Eleventh
Annual Golden Gate Challenge" will be held at San
Franciscos historic Ocean beach. This event is put on by the Northern California Kite Club (NCKC) with the competitions managed by the Bay Area Sport Kite League (BASKL). Because this event is held after the close of the 2002 AKA season it is actually the first event of the 2003 season! Thats what makes this one so much fun, fliers that are moving up in class will do so at this event and new fliers will want to compete here or will have "missed" one event in their first season. Traditionally this event is "Novice Friendly" and we encourage any and all first timers to come out and try their hand at kite ballet and precision flying. Here you will find friendly help from all the "Old Timers" often lending their personal kites to help less prepared competitors fly their events. Whether competitor, fun flier or single line kite enthusiast, this huge beach gives plenty room for all kite flyers to enjoy the day. The last few years the S.F. fog burnt off early in the day and left us with beautiful clear sunny days and mild winds, though everyone knows the winds can get pretty strong in the afternoons here. A great way to spend Labor day weekend, bring your kites, bring your friends and come on out to Ocean Beach. Lunch will be available for the pre-registered flyer's if they signed up for it. If you decide not to take advantage of the great lunch available by Pete Hartman and the NCKC group , be sure to bring your own (it's a long day of fun and you will get hungry!). Registration closes at 9:30 am
the event starts promptly at 10:00. You can pre-register by downloading and printing out the Adobe
.pdf format For more information regarding this event contact nckc_bod@skiner.com We are always seeking sponsors for this event. If you would like YOUR
company name on this years Golden Gate Challenge T-shirts please contact: |

Style Format
Standard Precision events have two components, Compulsory & Freestyle. The Compulsory component tests the competitor's skill at flying a pre-selected maneuver or figure. Competitors will be advised of the compulsory maneuvers in advance of the meet. The Freestyle component tests the competitor's ability in the precision flying of sport kites. The choice of the maneuvers is at the discretion of the individual competitor or team. The scoring focus is on the competitor's ability to plan and demonstrate a sense of program - one that includes transitions from one maneuver or series of maneuvers to the next, one that uses maneuvers with varying degrees of difficulty, one that reflects the competitor's overall skill level, etc. Both components are flown without musical accompaniment. Organizers decide whether the compulsory or freestyle component is flown first; however, once a competition event begins, the same format must used for all competitors in that event. |
