Getting There Is Half The Fun...Right?

This looks like a good kite story to snack on!

The lower Nevada desert is THE perfect place to have a kite festival. The "Fifth AVI Festival" held at the beautiful AVI hotel and Casino in Laughlin Nevada was a great success.

With celeb fliers from all over the country playing in the warm desert winds. With all the vices in one place, kites, wind, gambling, food, several bars, live music inside and out, this event has become the event of the season for just plain laid back fun and socializing, A new addition to the AVI this year was a cocktail party with tons of cheese and crackers and a FREE bar. Only once before had I seen a kite festival with a free bar, that was at the 1993 AKA convention in Seaside Oregon, the hospitality room!

- THE FUN -

I’m not sure why it took 14 hours to drive the normally 10 or so hour ride!

Tim and Evan and my sister Sharon and I set out in two cars, our plan was to caravan the whole way.

It didn’t really take all that long to get back in the car after I locked the keys inside at our first stop!

And the route that Mapquest took us only added an hour or so........and we didn’t loose that much time looking for gas, out on that detour

Nor did we loose much time while that CHP told us how the judge was not going to like these tickets for going "80 I a 30 mile zone" … he really didn’t spend much time practicing his penmanship!

For sure the time was not wasted eating at Mikes coffee shop in Mojave! It was well worth the time and little money we paid for dinner ...this place is great!

When Tim’s generator blew out, with about 40 miles or more to go, we didn’t waste much time working on it... not much we could of done anyway so we kept going ...but perhaps a little slower

We made it to... some where? ...but the car was still going and I knew we were within 10 miles of the AVI, so we didn’t waste much time at that gas station (where we should have left it!) and continued on.

Well it seemed like as soon as that station was out of sight in the rear view that Tim’s tail lights were out and so was his headlights..........and its way after dark; its nearly midnight!

That last 10 miles DID take us some time. That last section of road not only was crooked but it went up and down....my head light helped quite a bit in that windy section, but when he dropped down in to a low spot or crowned over a high area it was dark, way dark, so he would hit his brakes (which I couldn’t see) and nearly stop......so here I’d come over that hill or down in that low spot and there he’d be stopped!

That darn car made thou..... just .....as he pulled it into a parking spot in front of the AVI hotel it died sputter putt.....and coasted to a stop.

I love going to kite festivals and think getting there is half the fun!

  Tasty!
