October 2002

Oct. 26/27 I went to the Northern California Kite Club Fall Campout... yeup camped in my new kitbag... (Vanna). It turns out she is a good sleeper too! We camped at a place called Woodward Reservoir about an hour from my house, out near Oakdale. Unfortunately there was little to no wind there this weekend, and the only things that were flying were the black flies.... Geesus I have never seen so many flies in my life! We did have a great turnout, over 31 adults and about 6 or 7 kids! We did have enough food for a small army and our annual Saturday night buffet dinner was awesome... incredible even! Anyone that missed it really MISSED it! Seems like we spent all weekend eating and trying to get a kite in the sky! I really enjoyed visiting with every one and thanks everyone for attending the meeting, that went pretty well!! I took some photos... funny they are all of us sitting around and eating!!

Oct. 19/20 Went to the "Kites Over Pismo" event! Pismo Beach is a great little town and a perfect setting for a  kite festival! We arrived Friday around 3 pm and got in a few great hours of sweet wind flying. All the kiter's (well all the invited guests) stayed in the Dolphin motel right on the beach, this gave us perfect parking and partying spaces! Saturday was one of those one in a hundred kiting days! Everything we put up just stayed up and we really packed the sky! WHAT a day! The demo field was busy all day both days as was the fighter kite field! Now if a perfect day was not enough the organizers  James and Kendra Warner and their crew provided a 5 or 6 piece kettle drum band (or pan drums. I'm not sure what to call 55 gallon drums turned into musical instruments)! At any rate this group really cranked out some great music... and then the belly dancers showed up and entertained us for an hour so so... tooo much! All this while we ate barbequed beast, chicken and sausage... and don't forget the 13 pies and ice cream... geeses I went to bed hurting!! Sundays wind was a bit disappointing as it never really developed in to anything good and the fog never lifted till around 3, still we managed to have plenty fun and fly and fiddle with kites all day. Again they provides barbequed chicken sandwiches for lunch and kept us hydrated all weekend with water, sodas beers and wine!  The event was a great success and all that attended are planning for next year! Here are the event pictures.

Dan Whitney took a zillion pictures for everyone to check out!

Oct. 6 Convention over... A group of us went to Gettysburg P.A to tour the battlefield...WOW some photos of it here too soon!

Oct. 5 HOT and sweaty in Saturday, to Dam hot and way low winds. Suffered out there as long as I could and headed in for a shower and clean clothes and headed to the awards banquet and members choice kite voting. Man there was some great stuff showed tonight and I took photos of most of em. HEY, guess who won the masters Precision event!!! Yeup, that would be me!!! 1st place out of 14 of the Nations best. Here is the picture of my trophy!

Oct. 4 Friday was  loooong day for the Masters pairs and teams competitors. It was a warm day and the winds were perfect.... around 11 to 14 and way smooth. There were some great routines ours as well. We never flew our ballet better than ever, man we were on ...till I made the wrong turn right into Miguel and down went the kites, we recovered ok but it was bad enough to knock us down to 4th out of 11... BUT we did get a third in the precision...We all got off the beach and cleaned up in time to get to the auction Banquet. I took a bunch of photos of the stuff up for auction and other stuff like my favorite Newbies, first time convention goers, Jim and Kim Kloenkner (I think). I had a good time playing with them as I teased them as I got to know my new kite friends! Here are today's pictures.

Oct. 3 Today was HOT and sweaty. I didn't like it much here today! Miguel and I tried to practice but found it less than enjoyable in the humidity and loooow wind!  However the evening was great, we went to the fly mart, which was full of great stuff and people. The highlight of the day was for sure the indoor competitions. Before the event they presented an indoor show similar to the one they presented at kites on ice... but without all the production stuff... it was quite nice and the place had standing room only. The indoor competition was fantastic.... I tried to get a photo of everyone (there was 11), but alas if they weren't moving I was and some photos were BAD!!! Sorry if you didn't make it into the gallery. Tonight is the auction Banquet, should be fun with 500 kiter's in the same room!  Here are today's pictures.

HAPPY POST BIRTHDAY SHARON!!

Oct. 2 Well nirvana it may not be!!! It was damn hot here today, specially when the wind was so light. It eventually picked up around 1 ish this afternoon... and it never did get to the speed it did the last few days.... BUT it was sweet and smooth as could be ~ I spent most ... well ok all day on the sportkite fields... no chairs no shade! BUT I did manage a 4th out of 14 in the masters Ballet and I am top three in the masters precision!!!! It was an awesome field of fliers and surprised even myself with that result!! there was lots of other stuff going on today but I only managed some photos of the competitions and some shots of only a few of the kitemaking kites being judged. Here are today's pictures.

Oct. 1 Hey it's Sharon Musto's birthday today, if ya read this send her a e-mail hello and happy b-day thought!!!  HAPPY  BIRTHDAY SHARON, wish you were here!

Today was fantastic! even the meeting I had to go to early this morning was not bad at all. The soooo sweet winds picked up around noon and everyone was HAPPY! The beach here are not all that wide but they are plenty looooong specially if you are walking down to field 1 geeesh! great kites in the sky all day, great competition And Aaron, my son did really great, he is top three in both his events... I think he firsted them both, but hey I'm partial! I'll try my hand at it tomorrow with two events. There was a party at one of the hotels, put on by "Go Fly A Kite". Which had a great live band, free food, and drinks... The place was packed, we are nearing 500 registered kiters!!! One word  "FUN". Here are some of the photos I took today. Sorry I don't know who made all the kites.
