Kitemaking Workshop
#3 Update

This Is the Best Flying Kite I own

The third workshop in the NPNW series turned out to be something special.

Nathan Sendan conducted the class; we built Lee Toy fighter kites… Real Lee Toy Fighter kites! We used materials from Lee’s workshop! The fabric, the fine laminated hardwood spines, the fiberglass bow spars, all came from Lee’s things donated by his family.

This workshop we all learned to appliqué using circles of many different sizes and colors…all cut out by Lee himself, many circles were sewn together to create different forms, sewn by Lee and never used. There were dozens to choose from ….and wonder what he had in mind when he cut and sewed those pieces together.

Lee was surly there guiding our hands, no one had a problem with their lay out and for sure all of our sewing skills had noticeably improved!

There were 10 kites born to the wind that day and most of them were in the air by the end of the day….I heard one builder, laying on her back in the grass, sun on her smile, exclaim "this is the best flying kite I own!"

Those that chose to not attend really missed out on a special day and a very special kite……I can honestly say Lee Toy and I worked together to build my kite!
